David Michael Cavanaugh, 78, of Winterville, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 3, 2025, at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA.
He was born on August 23, 1946 in Harrisburg, PA. David was the son of the late James Michael and Eulene Cavanaugh. David served in the United States Navy as a gas turbine systems technician; he retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1984 after 20 years of service. After retirement, he went on to have a successful career as an electrical engineer.
David was known for his passion for the mountains, fishing, boating, and camping. He also loved to read. More than anything, he enjoyed quality time with the love of his life, Donna. David had a strong faith in God and leaves behind a legacy of love.
Memorial Service with military honors will be Tuesday 1:00pm at Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes with Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. The family will visit from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.
David is survived by his wife, Donna Cavanaugh; his children, Sean Michael (Leigh Anne) Cavanaugh, and Elizabeth (Kerry Sr.) Tyler; grandchildren, Anthony David Cavanaugh, Victoria (Shadian) Torres, Trevor Cavanaugh (Tabatha Hill), Timothy, Kerry, and Kaleb Tyler; great grandchildren, Levi, Aven, and Chandler Cavanaugh, Harmony and Cora Torres; David is also survived by his sister, Sandy (John) Sellers, and brothers, Bruce (Cindy) and Brian (Barbara) Cavanaugh; nieces and nephews.
David arranged to have his body donated to Emory University School of Medicine for Parkinson’s Research.
Flowers may be sent to the funeral home and / or donations may be made in his memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
