David Paul Camp, 73, entered into eternal life with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 15, 2025 in Marietta, GA. He was born on June 2, 1952 in Atlanta, GA to the late Paul & Helen Camp of Watkinsville, GA. David grew up in Watkinsville and was a member of Boy Scouts. He graduated from Oconee High School in 1970. He went on to attend Gainesville and Breneau Colleges. He was a member of a local rock and roll band named “The Future Perfect”. He was the long haired hippie drummer.

In 1972, he joined the Athens Police Department and transferred to Clarke County Police in 1974. He officially retired in 2007 with the rank of Major. After 26 years of service and retirement from the police department, David was hired by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department to develop and implement the county’s first Emergency 911 system. After serving as the 911 Director for 20 years, he retired for a second time, totaling his length of service to 44 years. In 1997, David attended and graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. David was a proud supporter and advocate for public safety communications and first responders of all disciplines.

He is survived by his two brothers – Thomas (Lacy) Camp of Mont Eagle, TN, Jimmy (Starr) Camp of Marietta, GA, sister-in-laws – Holly Camp of Morganton, NC, Suzy Kerns of Crawford, GA, and his faithful companion and dog, Scout. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their children.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 42 years, Alice Kerns Camp, and his older brother, Lawrence Camp.

David wrote a letter to everyone which will be read at his memorial service to be held on January 10, 2026 at 2:00pm at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home (East) in Athens, GA. The family will accept visitors beginning one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A reception will also be held at the funeral home after the service. In lieu of flowers, David requested donations of love to Tuckston United Methodist Church, Athens, GA, your local law enforcement agency or your local 911 center.
