Listen to Obituary

Wade Thurmond, born in Sasser, Georgia in 1949, passed away surrounded by the love of a family he cherished deeply. A proud son of Terrell County, he carried a special affection for that corner of Georgia throughout his entire life.

In 1981, Wade made his home in Athens, Georgia, where he would spend the better part of his life in service to others. He devoted the majority of his career to emergency mental health — first with Advantage, and later in the emergency department of Athens Regional Medical Center. In his later years, he spent his time hunting treasures and building collections, finding great joy in the thrill of the search.

Wade was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ramona Thurmond; his parents, Clarence Randolph Thurmond and Ida Mae Weston Thurmond; and his brother, Jerry Thurmond.

He is survived by four children: Betsy Sinclair (Mike) of Franklin, NC; Jon Thurmond (Michelle) of Arnoldsville; Jennifer Ivey (Larry) of Elberton; and Brandi Thompson (Jason) of Bogart. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren — Will, Mac, Marshall, and MaryElla Sinclair; Garrett and Grayson Gilreath; Jonathan Thurmond; Ali Witcher (Brantley); Cole Hudson; and Brennan and Ashton Thompson — as well as three great-grandchildren, Harper, Braylee, and Riley Witcher. He is further survived by his nephew, Tracy Doster, of Dawson.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Oconee Memorial Park on Friday, April 10, at 2:00 p.m.

Lord and Stephens, West is in charge of arrangements.
