Christine Devereaux

Christine Barrett Devereaux, age 91, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, at her home with family by her side.

Born in Long County, GA, to James Barrett and Annie Fulton, Chris was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Long County High School in 1952 and later from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Atlanta.

In 1956, she married Theron Devereaux of Jesup, GA, and together they made Athens their home while Theron attended forestry school at UGA. Chris began her nursing career in 1960 at the old St. Mary’s Hospital on Milledge Avenue. Over 36 years, she dedicated herself to caring for others at St. Mary’s, retiring from the Baxter Street campus as a Clinical Director of Nursing.

Chris was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 65 years. She had a green thumb which allowed her to enjoy a beautiful yard. She also enjoyed cooking family dinners and shared with her neighbors frequently. She especially loved babies and cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Known for her generosity and her sense of fun, Chris brought laughter and warmth wherever she went. She enjoyed the annual cookout at the tree farm.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Theron, and her son, Pat Devereaux. She is survived by her sons Dan Devereaux of Athens, GA, and Jon Devereaux of Merritt Island, FL; daughters Lynn Wilkie (Dan) of Bogart, GA, and Lisa Fields (David) of Hull, GA; as well as eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.

Chris made life fun and leaves her family with countless cherished memories.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of your favorite charities or Athens Pregnancy Center.

The family will receive friends at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST, Watkinsville, on Thursday from 6-8pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 1pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, followed by entombment at Evergreen Memorial Park.
