Christine Lamb Battcher

July 30, 1922 — July 13, 2023

Athens

Christine Lamb Battcher, 100, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2023, at the Athens, Georgia home of her daughter, Diane.

She was born Christine Jeanette Lamb in Danville, Georgia on July 30, 1922 and was a daughter of Lillie Mae Bozeman Lamb and Benjamin Harvey Lamb. She was twice widowed.  In 1940 she married Albert Stacy Monaghan who died in 1966.  Together they raised three daughters, Diane Monaghan Sanders, Kay Monaghan Knickrehm, and Debra Monaghan Shreve in Macon, Georgia. After Stacy’s death she married Glenn Battcher, who died in 1997.

She is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Brad Sanders and Steve Knickrehm; four grandchildren, Christopher Berry (and his wife Tara), Dylan Smith, Mark Knickrehm, and Quinn Shreve; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Christopher Smith. She is also survived by three nieces, Ellen Claire Minton, Phyllis Harbin, and Irene Mills, a sister-in-law, Ginger Monaghan, and two nephews, Dan and Dennis Monaghan.

Christine had no desire to live alone and at one time or another, she lived with each of her daughters. They enjoyed her company and they are grateful for the time they had with her as adults. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was also very close to her caring granddaughter-in-law, Tara Berry.

Christine loved the outdoors and, weather permitting, that is where you could find her – sitting in the garden and basking in the sun. She was an avid reader. She loved the ocean. She passed these passions on to her daughters, for which they are grateful.

She also adored all of the family pets.  The dogs in particular learned early on that she was a pushover for treats, and they could usually be found sitting at her feet in adoration. Someone once described Christine as a true Southern lady -- an apt description. She is greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family prefers memorial donations in Christine's memory be made to the Madison-Oglethorpe County Animal Shelter.
