Charles Neal Booth, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and churchman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital, Athens, GA after a short period of declining health. He was 91 years old.
Born November 11, 1933, in Danielsville, Georgia, Jones Chapel community. Charles was one of six children born to Walter Gladston Booth and Laurie Estelle Long Booth. He was a graduate of Danielsville High School, Class of 1951. He attended Business School in Atlanta studying accounting, typing, and shorthand.
He lived most of his life in Madison County apart from the time he served his country in the United States Air Force, September 1953 – September 1957, transitioning to Air Force Reserves until September 1961. He joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation in October 1958 until his retirement June 30, 1990. Following Westinghouse, Charles bailed many rolls of hay with his beloved brother-in-law and best buddy Pete Porterfield. During retirement he held several part-time jobs.
His sister, Sue and her sister-in-law, Mary Lee introduced Charles to Barbara Ann Poss in September 1958. Following a brief time of courting they were married January 16, 1959. They raised two sons, Neal Walter Booth born October 1, 1960, and Randall Poss Booth born April 20, 1963.
Charles joined Meadow Baptist Church in 1961. Being ordained to the office of Deacon serving his Lord and Church for 63 years. He served as church treasurer, member of the choir, and many other offices until recent years.
Charles was admired for his loving heart, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and willingness to help those in need. He had the occasional challenges with patience and self-control, but rising to the offices of father-in-law and grandfather were excellent therapy for him. These spiritual gifts defined his relationships throughout his life. Whether helping communities in crisis resulting from disasters through his devoted service with Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, Unit 19, he brought warmth and comfort to every interaction. He served communities hit by tornado, hurricane, flood as well as assisted in the cleaning of apartment buildings near “ground zero” following 9/11.
Above all, Charles was devoted to his family. He was a proud and loving father to Neal and Randall. Nothing brought him more joy than being a grandfather. He loved Eric, David, Walt, Ben, Jordan and Matt. He made many trips to Gainesville and across the State of Georgia to watch football, baseball, basketball, and tennis. He and Barbara often drove to Allen, TX to attend various activities including band festivals. No matter who he was with, he was always present with a loving smile, a laugh, and a willingness to be involved and support in whatever way he could.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Barbara; son, Neal (Sandy) of Gainesville; his grandchildren, Eric (Camilla), David (Morgan), Walt (Natalie), Ben (Carin), Jordan Crawley (Trevor), and Matt. Sisters, Aldean Jinks (Athens, GA); Sue Porterfield (Comer, GA). Eight great grandchildren, and several in-laws plus nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter (1936), Laurie (1996), sister, Kathryn (1946), sister Margaret (1945), son, Randall (2011), and brother, Howard “Bill” (2021).
He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Meadow Baptist Church, 6158 GA-191, Comer, GA, 30629 at 3:00 Sunday afternoon, October 26th. Reverend Mike Sarna will officiate. Following the service the family will greet friends in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meadow Baptist Church, Meadow Cemetery Fund, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, or a charity of your choice.
