Byron Stuart Lomas, 56, of Decatur, GA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, May 5, 2025. He had been under hospice care at The Grove in Watkinsville, GA.
Byron was born in Atlanta, GA, at the former Georgia Baptist Hospital. He grew up in DeKalb County and attended Henderson High School before going on to receive his bachelor's degree in Organizational Development. He enjoyed a variety of professions throughout his career. He worked in Atlanta's legal community for many years, first with Atlanta Legal Copies as a copy center manager for a number of law firms and then thirteen years working for the Atlanta Bar Association where he was lovingly referred to a "jack of all trades" and wore many hats around the office. Later, he went on to finish his career in real estate and property management, working for several different companies throughout the Atlanta area.
Byron was an avid collector. He loved scouring estate sales for bargains and for rare and unique collections. He amassed an impressive collection of Atlanta 1996 Olympics collectibles, and he enjoyed hunting for the various pieces of folk art that donned his house.
He also loved music - both as a listener and also as a performer. As a listener, he enjoyed displaying his impressive record collection and attended many concerts throughout the years. As a performer, he began drumming at a young age, beginning in elementary school and continuing through high school. He also played in several bands including a Christian rock band, and later he played the drums in the praise band at Grace UMC in Atlanta.
Byron loved photography and he was responsible for photographing various events and functions for the Atlanta Bar Association during his time there. He thoroughly enjoyed framing and displaying many of the beautiful pictures he captured while traveling across the U.S. He especially loved and reminisced about several trips to Canada, Hawaii, California, and cities in the Northeast.
While Byron was known to family and friends as a man of few words, he was full of wisdom and wit, and he loved a good joke. He enjoyed living in Decatur and could frequently be spotted at Melton's App & Tap or Manuel's Tavern in Atlanta over the years. He was a hard worker who never asked much from others, yet always had much to give. Byron was an active member at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Decatur for many years, before moving his membership to Oak Grove UMC. He was a man of strong but quiet faith, and enjoyed the many opportunities for gathering in the house of the Lord, whether it was for Sunday service or church BBQ, a church work day or a Wednesday Night Supper.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Suzanne Lomas, who both passed away in 2022. He is survived by his brother Scott (Jennifer) of Comer, GA; his nieces Emily Lomas and Leah Lomas of Dahlonega; and his nephew Ryan Lomas of Dahlonega.
A celebration of Byron's life will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA, at 11:00 am in the Sanctuary. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service.
Donations may be made in Byron's name to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
