Listen to Obituary

Betty Glenda Cunningham, age 78, of Oglethorpe County, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025. She was the daughter of the late James David Barnett and Roberta Mary (Byrnes) Barnett of Oconee County.

Glenda was a beloved and selfless mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a talent and passion for tending and nurturing plants; in years past her porch and yard overflowed with a variety of flowering beauties. More recently, she took great joy in observing the many birds visiting multiple feeders outside her window. Saturdays in the fall were reserved for cheering on her Georgia Bulldogs, a tradition she rarely missed and that she passed along to her children at a very early age. She loved gospel hymns and attending Bible Study meetings.

Glenda was preceded in death by her three cherished sons, Kevin, Matthew, and Christopher, as well as her parents and two siblings.

She is survived by her daughters, Cindy Mallett (Robert) of Brooklet, Georgia, and Christy McDonald of Comer, Georgia; daughter-in-law Felicia Cunningham of Homer, Georgia; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters.

Lord and Stephens Athens has been entrusted with final arrangements; however, no formal services will be held. The family invites those who knew Glenda to remember her by planting a flower, tending a bird feeder, or making a contribution to the charity of your choice.

The family extends our deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff at Quiet Oaks Nursing Home for the gentle care and kindness they extended over the past two and a half years. We are also profoundly thankful to the teams at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital and Compassus Hospice. Their compassion and support brought comfort, peace, and the priceless gift of time with our loved one during her final days.

Glenda’s kind spirit, quiet humor, and love for life’s simple pleasures will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
