Benjamin Thomas Wheless, age 83, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2025.

Thomas, of Sandy Cross, was born on February 6, 1942 to Joseph H. Wheless and Lula Catherine Thomas Wheless. He was raised in Oglethorpe County and developed a strong work ethic which he carried throughout his whole life. Thomas proudly served in the US Army and was stationed in South Korea, where he met his loving wife, Sunnie. After his service to his country, he returned home to Lexington to pursue his career and later retired from Macon Electric Coil.

Thomas' passion in life was farming and gardening- the ripe bounty of which was shared year after year with all of his friends and family. He also enjoyed working with his hands and could skillfully repair just about anything with his special knack for solving problems. He loved to read his Bible and truly cherished family gatherings, with a great-grandchild on each knee. He was a dedicated member and Deacon of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.

He is survived by his three children: Laura (Kee) Kwak, Gina (John) Fessler, and Dongchol Chang; three grandchildren: Eric Kwak, Lauren (Thomas) Gardner, and Renate (Anton Swain-Gil) Fessler; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Evelyn Carlisle and Kay Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Chong Sunnie Wheless; brothers: Joseph H. Jr and Ray; and sisters: Louise, Willie Lee, and Betty.

A funeral service to honor Thomas' life will be held at 2:00 PM on December 31, 2025 at Sandy Cross Cemetery with Pastor Calvin Weaver officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sandy Cross Baptist Church.
