Barbara Ann Whitehead of Watkinsville, Georgia, born June 29, 1949, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Born in Athens, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Riddling Jr. and Joan Riddling. Barbara grew up in the Athens area and graduated from Oconee County High School, where she met the love of her life and husband of 58 years, Byron Whitehead. She attended nursing school and dedicated many years of service to the Athens community, offering compassionate care in dentistry, primary care, and elder care.
Barbara’s love and kindness were quiet yet unwavering; a generosity of spirit offered freely and without boundary. She never sought the spotlight, but her steady, gentle presence was felt by all. Always humble, always caring, she was the one who appeared without hesitation whenever someone needed her.
By far her greatest joy was her family, and she delighted in sharing stories about them with anyone who would listen. Known as “Nana” to her grandchildren and great‑grandchildren, she leaves behind a lifetime of love and memories for them to cherish, as well as an example of grace and devotion for future generations.
Survivors include her husband, Byron Whitehead; son, Chuck (Bethany) Whitehead; daughter‑in‑law, April Strickland Whitehead; sister, Diane (Tim) Watson; brother‑in‑law, Jimmy Dickens; and grandchildren, Taylor (Luke) Jackson, Logan Whitehead, Courtney Homer, Anna Whitehead, Elissa Homer, Katlynn (Garrett) Smith, Kendra Kent, Jordan Whitehead, Lucas Whitehead, and Charlie Whitehead; along with three great‑grandchildren, Stella Smith, Oaklynn Tullis, and Archie Jackson with another one on the way.
Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved son, Adam Kirk Whitehead; brother, Michael Riddling; and sister‑in‑law, Myra Nell Dickens. The family takes comfort in the belief that a joyous reunion in Heaven took place on Wednesday morning.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Lord and Stephens West location, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a chapel service to follow.
