Barbara Susan Johnson, 76, of Athens died on June 29, 2025. The daughter of the late Doris Stamps Johnson and Paul Samuel Johnson Sr., whom she dearly loved.
There are two words that best describe her – Strength and Passion. She lived with Leukemia for 22 years, was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago BUT WON and rang the bell in celebration of beating colon cancer! Her undying love for her three children was unwavering as a single mom who fought hard her entire life to make sure they were taken care of, and they were taught to be strong and live life without excuses and without giving up. They learned from her example. This was all made possible by her love and faith in God that she practiced as an ordained minister. Through thick and thin she always professed her faith that God had her back and that the challenges she went through were simply tests of her faith. She passed those tests – and now is receiving the heavenly benefits. God is true and faithful!
Until the end she always gave credit to family, friends and medical people who deserved recognition for making a great impact on her life. This includes her close friend Debbie Kaye where she lived for many years at Lanier Gardens, who lovingly adopted Ms. Johnson’s special canine companion, Bisket, and who is also treating him like a canine king. Credit is also given to Diane Edwards who has been so much more than just an aide – she was loved and appreciated by Ms. Johnson and the entire family for her dedication during and after.
She is a Godsend! Recognition also needs to be given to the entire staff at University Cancer and Blood Center (UCBC) who provided superior care. Especially Dr. Frederick Flynt that made the Leukemia journey more tolerable with his professional knowledge and personal, caring touch. Ms. Johnson sang his praises. THANK YOU, Dr. Flynt!!!
Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by mother Doris Johnson, Father Paul S. Johnson Sr., Brother Joseph Johnson, Brother Paul S. Johnson Jr., and Daughter April Diane Montañez.
Ms. Johnson is survived by Daughter Stephine Houston, Son Harlon Matthews, Brother Johnny Honea, Brother Ronnie Johnson, Sister Peggy LaValley, Brother Jerry Johnson, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and Biskit.
