Dr. Amasa Guy Larkins of Danielsville, Georgia passed away at home on August 10, 2025, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 09, 1937, the son of Margaret Ramage and Amasa Hamblin. He was later adopted by his stepfather Alton Larkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two sisters Margaret Orelene Hamblin and Megan “Edna Chloe” Hamblin, and by his half-brother Ronald Hamblin. He is survived by his loving wife Sharon May Larkins (Knight), his children Cathi Larkins Palmer (Ronald), LeeAnn Larkins Johnson (Grant), David Guy Larkins (Emily), Elizabeth Ruth Larkins, and Jennifer Larkins Cantrell (Christopher), a half-sister Mary Balke, fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Dr. Larkins earned a BS in education from the University of Utah and an EdD from Utah State University. He retired from the education department of the University of Georgia where for thirty years he helped educate some of the finest teachers in the Athens area. He was a prolific published author with many academic texts and a dedicated fan of Georgia Bulldogs football and the Gym Dogs. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he held various leadership positions including more than thirty years as the church organist.
He was well known for his wry, if not dry, sense of humor and the practical jokes he enjoyed playing on family, including the “napkin game” of which he still holds every known record. In his retired years he became a published poet inspired by his love for his wife and his pig, Boaz.
Family will receive visitors at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 706 Whitehead Road, Athens, GA 30606 on Monday, August 18th at 3:00 pm with a funeral to follow at 4:00 pm.
