Allen Ray Powers

February 5, 1955 — August 8, 2023

Allen Ray Powers, 68, of Watkinsville, GA died on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

Born in Orange, TX, he was the son of Raymond Lee Powers of Madison, GA and the late Mary Frances Powers. In addition to his mother, Allen was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years and mother of their two children, Ann Breedlove Powers and son, William Allen Powers Breedlove. Allen received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Auburn University and retired as the Director of Gas Operations for Walton EMC Natural Gas after 16 years. He served in the US Navy and was a member of First Christian Church of Watkinsville.

As a child and a young man, Allen was known to have a kind, caring, generous spirit. He exhibited a strong work ethic from a very early age. One example included mowing lawns at a very young age to save money for an outboard motor for his jon boat. He  delivered newspapers in the very early mornings in a 1960 Volkswagen Beetle before going to class at Choctawhatchee High School. Allen was an avid swimmer, boater, and fisherman. Allen and his father built a styrofoam sailboat covered in fiberglass which he sailed up and down the bayous of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Allen had a great sense of humor and enjoyed performing in school plays as well as playing the trumpet in the high school band.

Allen served 3 years active duty in the United States Navy as an Avionics Electronics Technician on board a P-3 Orion anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft. He traveled the world chasing submarines from Brunswick, Maine to Roda, Spain, the Azore Islands,  Iceland and many more places. After three years of active duty, Allen attended Auburn University while serving in the Naval Reserves.

Allen had a very interesting career in the natural gas industry. Over the course of his career in natural gas, he worked at Atlanta Gas Light, City of Lawrenceville, City of Winder, several consulting firms, and ended his career at Walton EMC Natural Gas. He is remembered for being kind, caring, building relationships with people and being a man of his word. Allen preferred working in the field and had a passion for building large  pipeline projects.

Allen loved his family more than anything else in the world. A close second is the The Pastures of Rose Creek (formerly The Breedlove Dairy Farm) where he lived from 1984 until his death. Allen, his wife Ann, and his children Francie and Will worked hard to preserve the farm. In the early 2000s Allen worked with the Department of Agriculture to obtain grants that helped with soil conservation, etc. In 2013, Ann Breedlove Powers bought her son Will a Piedmontese bull and a herd of cows and The Pastures of Rose Creek was born.

Allen retired from 2019 to become a grandpa. In four years he was blessed with four grandchildren. Most days you could find Allen giving rides in his Grandpa golf cart all over the farm. Or he might be at the Watkinsville library, The State Botanical Gardens of Georgia, or the ESP Playground entertaining his grandchildren. In 2021, Allen met Cheryl who he married within a year. The two of them enjoyed traveling, playing with grandchildren, walking on the farm with their family, swimming at the Oconee Aquatic Center and going to yoga classes.

In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Cheryl Powers of Watkinsville; daughter and son-in-law: Francie and Rodolfo Pastor of Honduras; daughter-in-law: Lori Demosthenes Breedlove of Watkinsville; stepsons and stepdaughter in-law: Tyler, Jessie, Colin, and Jack Efird; sister and brother-in-law: Laura and Brett Savage; nephews and niece:  John, Matt, Katie, and Jack Savage; brother and sister-in-law: Claire and Ed Milton and four grandchildren: Ana Beatriz Pastor, Rodolfo Allen Pastor, Charli Ann Breedlove and Henry Stratton Breedlove.
