Rev. Alan Arthur Mace, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and ordained minister with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), passed away in Athens, GA on Saturday, October 14, 2023, due to complications from congestive heart failure. He was 77.
The son of Roby and Lillus Mace, he was born in St. Francis, KS. Alan received his B.A. from Phillips University in Enid, OK and went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. He later received a Doctorate of Education from Vanderbilt University.
Alan is survived by his wife, Janice D. Mace of Athens, GA; daughter Anne-Marie (Kevin) Mankin of Tullahoma, TN; grandsons Justin Mankin, of Denver, CO; Cory Mankin(Sarah) of Highlands Ranch, CO; and Matthew Mankin (Hanna) of Dexter, IA; foster child Christina Shipman (Mark) of TN; he was the very proud great-grandfather of Ellie and Rhodes Mankin of Dexter, IA. He is also survived by his sisters, Phyllis (James) Wright of Enid, OK and Marilyn (Jim) Morford, of CO; and several nieces and nephews.
Alan was called to the ministry in his early 20's and truly had a passion for preaching, serving, and ministering to others. He served many local churches through the years in IL, FL, KS, TN, NC, and GA and served as the Associate Regional Minister of Texas and the Upper Midwest. He enjoyed leading and participating in workshops for fellow pastors and Disciple of Christ events.
Alan felt called to volunteer, working with local Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, working with crisis intervention and teaching others how to be crisis leaders. He spent time volunteering in CO, ND, and El Salvador doing disaster relief.
Alan was an avid fisherman, often found fishing on Normandy Lake. He enjoyed wood-working, hiking and loved his Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Christian Horned Frogs.
A celebration of life will be held on November 7, 2023 at 11:00 am and visitation from 10-11am at First Christian Church, Athens, GA, Rev. Elizabeth Hagan presiding.
