Diane Kirby, a tireless advocate for animals, a devoted protector of her family, and a champion of the underdog, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2026.
Diane was born in Toronto while her father, Edmond, was serving overseas with the Canadian military during World War II. Her mother, Doris, raised her until Edmond returned home five years later. Not long after his return, the family grew with the arrival of Diane’s two younger brothers, Robert and Glen.
As a young woman, Diane pursued a variety of interests and careers, working as a flight attendant for Air Canada, a professional model, an interior decorator, and a yoga instructor. Diane met Garry at a party, and to his credit, he was smart enough to offer her a ride home—even though it was five hours away! They began their married life in Montreal, where their sons, Sean and Scott, were born, before moving to Ottawa, where their daughter, Shannon, joined the family.
In 1979, they moved to Atlanta, where Diane devoted herself to raising her children with the same compassion for people and animals that her parents instilled in her. She was her children’s staunchest defender and biggest advocate, always reminding them, "You can be anything you want to be.” As empty nesters, Diane and Garry built their dream home on a horse property in Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee. It was here that Diane's soul felt most at home. She immersed herself in breeding and raising horses while continuing to give generously to the community around her. In the 1990s, she helped found the Oconee Regional Humane Society, which continues to thrive today. More than once, she jumped a fence to rescue a mistreated dog. A trailblazer and visionary, she also started the Plantation Ladies Club's annual tradition of preparing Christmas boxes for Meals on Wheels recipients and their pets. Diane and Garry's property was always home to stray animals—and sometimes stray people—who needed a second chance.
In her mid-seventies, Diane suffered a life-altering stroke. The determination with which she faced its challenges, while never losing her ability to laugh and find joy in life, was truly inspiring.
In 2021, Diane and Garry moved to Presbyterian Village of Athens, where they quickly felt at home among familiar faces from Reynolds Plantation and welcoming new friends.
Above all, Diane will be remembered for her quick wit, fierce devotion to family and friends, and extraordinary connection with animals. She stood firm in her beliefs, spoke her mind, and had a soft spot for anyone who needed a little extra love. Her children were her greatest pride, and nothing brought her more joy than her grandchildren. The world is a gentler, kinder, and better place because she was in it.
Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Doris Turgeon, and her brother, Glen Turgeon.
She is survived by Garry, her husband of 63 years; her children, Sean Kirby (Barbara) of Portland, Maine, Scott Kirby of Atlanta, Georgia, and Shannon Baynes (Thomas) of Lake Keowee, South Carolina; her brother, Robert Turgeon of Ithaca, New York; and her adored grandchildren, Paul, Kirby and Carson Baynes, Cameron Kirby, Jacquelyn and Emily Archambault.
A celebration of Diane's life will be held on November 27th. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Oconee Regional Humane Society
