Sandra (Sandy) Sue Huberty, 86, of Athens, GA died on November 15, 2023. The daughter of the late Joseph Earl and Charlotte (Feak) Van Vonderen, she was born in Coleman, WI, but lived in Athens, GA for over 50 years. Sandy was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Huberty, siblings Bob Van Vonderen, Carl Van Vonderen, and Athalie Mueller. Sandy is survived by brother Vernon Van Vonderen, sons, Greg (Patti) Huberty, Brian Huberty, Jeff (Lisa) Huberty, and Kurt Huberty, and grandchildren, Zak (Katie) Huberty, Nicholas (Teagan) Huberty, Aly Huberty and David Huberty.
After high school, Sandy attended nursing school at Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI. As a Registered Nurse, she worked in several different positions throughout her career. In August of 1966, Sandy married Carl Huberty and remained married for 54 years. Even with her busy job as a nurse, she always put her family first. She most loved being a mom and devoted her time caring for her children’s needs, especially preparing many meals to satisfy four, growing boys.
Sandy’s other great love was for all of God’s creatures. Dogs, cats, deer, birds, etc. brought her so much joy. She supported several animal-focused nonprofit organizations, and her favorite saint was Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment.
Her Catholic faith was important to her, and she was an active member of The Catholic Center at UGA especially enjoying her time participating in bible study. She was known for her quick wit, salty personality and being a jokester.
Sandy was quite artistic and expressed this through painting, pottery, and crafts. She was also talented in the kitchen and was famous for her homemade cookies which she took great delight in decorating with her children and grandchildren.
