"My staff and I become personally involved with the families we serve," Tom Lord says. "We want to make sure every detail is carried out as if it was for one of our own family members."

Because his funeral homes have always been family owned and operated, Tom feels that the are able to offer a very personalized level of service. This factor has also contributed to Lord & Stephens' success, making them one of the most prominent funeral home operations in Northeast Georgia.

In 1989, during aggressive times of consolidation within the funeral industry, Tom Lord realized a need for a locally owned and operated funeral home in Athens. He and partner Robert Stephens then opened the first Lord & Stephens establishment on Lexington Road.

Since then, Lord & Stephens has seen many expansions including 4 additional funeral homes in Bogart, Crawford, Danielsville and Watkinsville and 2 cemeteries, Athens Memory Gardens and Oconee Memorial Park. In 1996, Lord became sole owner of the homes.

Now, Lord & Stephens offer even more local services with the addition of Athens' only crematory. This allows for all cremation arrangements and services to be performed at the same location, giving families additional peace of mind.
